just bought a second hand imac running high sierra 10.13.6 but i need to upgrade to 10.14 at least to download Microsoft Word..as a total computer novice please help?!
or alternatively can anyone recommend a program that I could use instead of Microsoft?

A 2011 iMac cannot update beyond High Sierra.
Your options are either an older version of word that can work on it. Office 2016 for example, our a third party alternative.
I will second Niel's suggestion of LibreOffice. Its a pretty good suite for most uses and supports office formats fine and it's free.
Use an older version of Microsoft Office or a product such as LibreOffice.
