Apple watch our of storage

My apple watch keeps trying to update but it says storage full. It's a series 3. I go in to my watch app on my phone and it says there's 0 songs on my watch, 0 photos, and only 1 app. How is my storage full on my watch when there's nothing on it? Or how do I free up space to update it? Or do I have to buy a new watch?

Unpair your Apple Watch via the Watch app on your iPhone.

Then Re-pair your Apple Watch,this frees up a surprisingly large amount of storage space.And without any loss of data.

Or;

Is there anyone else besides me who is getting pretty annoyed by this? How can updating need 2.5 G free space on a 4 G watch? And do they seriously expect us to do the unpairing every time there is an update? - and then, by the way, I have to restore the unlocking of my Mac again, because that gets screwed up by the unpairing!
