My Mac is currently on MacOS High Sierra, version 10.13.6 and when I click Update Software it takes me to App store but no OS software shows available. What steps are necessary to update the OS software?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

You didn't post the model year of your iMac (from Apple menu > About this Mac).
