How can I recover lost photos?

My mac book pro was out of space I removed photos thinking they were stored in the icloud. I looked in my phone and noticed that the last year of pictures was gone, I tried to revert but did not recover the last year. I would like to know if I can recover my pictures and how to so it, help!
