I want to play my homepods thru my Apple TV but default audio output is not in my list of options in the video and audio menu of my Apple TV, nor is it available in Home app. All on same network.

The default audio is part of the home theatre feature, which is only available on the Apple TV 4K
I have Apple TV 4K- I should have mentioned. And the menu option was previously available.
You should update your profile, as you didn't mention and only the Apple TV HD was listed. Just to clarify, what OS is running on HP and ATV?
14.3 on Apple TV and homepods say “All accessories are up to date!”
Thats the exact article I was following that prompted me to ask my question in the first place. I can’t follow it because I don’t have “default audio output” option.
Ok. Do a reboot on both as well as logging out and back in with Apple ID
I thought that was going to work... but it didn’t. Logged out and in of Apple TV. Reset both homepods. Still no default audio option.

No problem. This isn't a normal occurrence and not sure what is going on here. At this point I would suggest contacting Apple support so you can walk through things in real time.
