Cannot fix gmail password in Mac Mail on Catalina

I had to change my google account password and now I am unable to send or receive any mail on my Mac Mail because after hours of trying to find a place to enter the new password, it spun a long time and said "Unable to verify account name or password". Apple is getting so user unfriendly that I will think long and hard about getting another one as it is getting time to replace.
