Can I OS restore a Mac Mini from an iMac 27" Time Machine backup?

Is it possible to restore an El Capitan Time Machine backup from my 2011 iMac 27" to a 2012 Mac Mini -- or will there be difficulties doing that OS restore because of the differences in internal hardware between the Mac Mini and the iMac?

I need to retain El Capitan temporarily until some important software packages I use are updated to support Catalina/64-bit.
