Why have my new photos from my iPhone stopped opening on my MacBook Pro? How can I fix it?

Photos that I take on my iPhone have suddenly stopped opening on my MacBook Pro. I can see the photos on my laptop, so they're uploading from the cloud, but when I click on them all I get is an exclamation mark. Older photos (plus screenshots and photos others have send me) still open fine. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.10

Hi

I guess you have updated your phone, and it is now recording photos in HEIC format.

If you can't update your Mac, then you will need to go into camera settings on your phone, and set the format to "most compatible" (Jpg)
