Update
I am not able to update my mac or maybe I just don't know how...can you help?

Start App Store app in dock or in /Applications folder.
Click on updates
Select what applications you want to update. Should let you update macOS to the latest version. I suggest you have a backup of you system. With important data saved in multiple places.
