unable to upgrade OS

Have OS X Yosemite

Version 10.10.5

unable to upgrade to latest OS (mac OS Big sur). Please advise!

First, you must verify that your particular Mac is supported by Big Sur. Since you have Yosemite now, I suspect your Mac was released before 2014-15 so there is a chance it is in fact not supported by the new macOS.

Choose "About This Mac" in the Apple menu to learn which mac model is yours.
