Permissions problem

I constantly get a message that I do not have permission to perform operations on my home drive (like deleting files, opening folders). I am the only one using this computer. The problems started when I upgraded the OS to Catalina 10;15.7. Please don't tell me to do the "Get Info" trick: I have tried that 3 million times for every file I cannot touch.

Permission Settings Hi, Since installing Catalina, I'm unable to change the permissions settings in Get Info for my main hard drive. I'm able to unlock it, but when I select Read & Write, I get a pop up that I don't have permission. There is only one account on the computer. When I open Users & Accounts in the System Prefs, I see "Allow user to administer this computer" is checked, but grayed out (maybe because only one account). I tried the terminal command recommended in another thread here on this forum, and it clearly ran the process, but upon restarting, the problem still exists. I tried to fix permissions in Disk Utility, but when I open the app, it just shows information without any options to do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you!

Unix permission issues with Catalina starting in ~June I am running Catalina 10.15.7 and suddenly after some upgrade in June, everything is f-d up for use in unix. Why would I get the enclosed warning when I have given myself permission to read and write? I have a file here. The app sends a message I can't do anything to the file because I don't have permission. Then when I try Plan B of giving everyone permission, the OS warns me this action is undoable. Why is that? Couldn't I just go back change the permission back to the way they were before? I have given myself permission to read and write. I have been looking through sort of similar questions and there some suggestions to "go to the drive". Don't quite understand what that means, but it sounds like I have to bypass this irritating warning and go somewhere deeper within the Mac OS. How and why?

Where are the files & folders located? If they are located outside of your home user folder, then macOS prevents you from making modifications to the system files which are now located on a read-only volume:

I have seen File Sharing mess up the permissions to the shared items even if File Sharing is no longer enabled. I forget how I resolved the permissions issue unless it was following the information in the article @rkaufmann87 linked. I might have had to uncheck a box on the "Get Info" section of the enclosing folder as well as it may still have been showing as "shared" even though File Sharing was disabled.
