Get rid of Old Apple ID on my Mac

I have an aging MacBook and I need to update the operating system. I have an old appleID on the computer that was set up with an email address that no longer exists. How do I get rid of the old appleID in order to use my current Apple ID so I can back-up to the cloud and install a more current OS?

thanks for any help!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.12

Can you sign out of the old ID using the article as a guide of where to sign out/in?

What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support.

If necessary, reset the computer as 'new'. Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility/First Aid. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase. Use Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button, and select GUID. Quit Disk Utility, then re-install the OS.

Reinstall from macOS Recovery

OS X Recovery

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.
