deleting large mail app

I am trying to free up space on my MacBook pro running Big Sur and noticed that my mail app is using 6 Gigs of space on my drive....how do erase the data in this file as I do not have 6 Gigs of data and have done some research indicating that apple mail keeps a copy of every email and attachment. Thanks
