Any USB external drive will work. I'd opt for an SSD rather than a rotation HD. Make sure it is formatted for your Mac before trying to use it.

SSD = Solid State Device.

Older drives, HDs, had rotating disks. Newer drives, SSDs have no moving parts so are faster, more durable, and more reliable than old HDs.
