You never updated the macOS before this? 10.10 Yosemite was the original macOS that came on the 2014 Mac Mini.

I think that you need to update to High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina before you can go to Big Sur.

it’s says it compatible, i can see big sur in app store, but i can’t download it. i have yosemite now and i have two factor authentication. there is no place to enter the 6 digit code.
