Mail quits as soon as it starts

Hello,

On my Macbook Pro running with El Capitan, Mail suddenly to acted up and quits now every time I try to start it. The error message says :

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000018

Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

I tried a few things already but nothing seems to help.

Any input would be very welcomed.

Update :

I found out (through looking at other answers on this forum) that in fact it is one of my mail accounts that was creating the problem in Mail.

By disabling the account through System Preferences, I can now start Mail and it does not quit.

Could someone walk me through the procedure to delete the faulty account, and recover the email archives before creating a new one?
