On my MacBookPro I would like to organise my folders in alphabetical order and the files within in date order. I only seem to be able to do one or the other for all.

Yes.
In your Finder Window— select a heading will organize accordingly, click the heading again will reverse the order.

This is very helpful thank you. It doesn't quite give me the solution I was hoping for, which is to not have to keep toggling back and forth as I move between folders, but I am very grateful for you taking the time to help me.
