Excel spreadsheets won't open in Numbers 10.3.5

I was always able to open Excel spreadsheets in Numbers but since upgrading to Catalina (10.15.7) and Numbers (10.3.5) and the latest version of Excel (16.16.27) the Numbers sheets open but they are completely blank. This is true for Excel sheets created years ago, not just recent ones. None of my Excel spreadsheets open. The Excel cells and data don't show. The problem started after the Numbers upgrade and before the Excel upgrade so I think the problem is in the Numbers program.

This is BIG problem for me because I greatly prefer working in Numbers

No problems here.

When you say "completely blank" do you really mean completely blank, like a numbers Sheet that has had everything deleted from it? Does it have any sheets with names or just the one default sheet with the name Sheet 1? No tables? Nothing?
