How to activate new SIM card in my new iPhone 12pro

I recently purchased an iPhone 12 pro. I previously had the iPhone 6s. I put my 6s SIM card into my new iPhone 12pro. Should I not have done that?

you may need to power off the 12 and power it back on.

If that doesn't work contact your cellular data provider.
