I have a macbook 12" retina 2017 (one USB-c) and just purchased an iMAC. When i try to my USB-C cord to connect the two devices, my macbook says thunderbolt accessory not supported. What cord can I use for a dual display with these devices?

No there is not, your question is extremely common and the answer is always the same. If you need an external display then you need to buy one, the good news they have come down in price and setting them up is simple. Instructions are in Use external monitors with your Mac
Target Display Mode has been discontinued for 2020 Macs. For earlier Macs the target machine must be a mid 2014 Mac or earlier running High Sierra or earlier.
