AirPods Pro staying connected in case

I 've seen people post about this issue for the standard airpods, but not for the pros. pretty frequently, one or both of my airpods will stay connected to my phone and thus won't charge when I put them away. It happens much more frequently with the left airpod. On one occasion, I saw my left bud hadn't charged again (it was at 70%), and then when I put it in the case and fiddled around with it a little bit to get it to charge, it dropped to 18% in like 2 minutes. I've tried cleaning out the case and resetting the airpods pro, but no luck. any ideas? or should I just be requesting a replacement case or earbuds?
