after I got thru all steps of unlocking my iPhone, how do I know now if it is unlocked?

What sort of unlocking do you mean.
Removing sim lock - you'll need to try a sim from a different provider than the one it was locked to.
Recovering from lock due to incorrect passcode entry - phone should be ready to be reset up as new (normally showing "hello"
