My old emails suddenly vanished. Is there any way to retrieve them?

Log onto your mail account on a web browser and look there.
Have you verified that your inbox mail messages are missing from the iCloud web portal?
If you cannot see your email when you sign-in to your email providers web portal, then your email messages are now gone/deleted - and cannot be recovered.

I am missing all the mails on my iCloud inbox prior to 1st October. The messages in the individual files are still there and so are sent messages. It’s just those in the inbox that are missing
