printer quit working. driver not compatible to 64 bit OS X V10.13.6? Legacy software issue?

The latest driver has been downloaded from the HP website (V5.1) Printer is HP Photosmart C4780 all-in-one. The HP website claims the latest version is supposed work with Sierra V10.13. Print jobs go to print Queue but never start. The print utility will Quit unexpectedly (crash with dump). An older driver has been downloaded V3.2.2 same symptoms.

The Mac was manufactured in 2012, but has been working fine. The printer will scan and print a copy. Mac to printer interface is USB.

Possible wrong guess. The the About This Mac software applications show HP Photosmart C4780 applications are both 32 and 64 bit APPS. Last modified in Oct. 2020. So why are jobs hung up in the Queue? Why does the print utility crash? The ink level display works fine. any suggestions would be appreciated.
