Backup fails lack of storage

I just upgraded to 50GB storage but cannot backup my iphone with 25.3GB used because of lack of storage. Does it take time before I can use the new icloud storage?

If you cannot backup -- If you can't back up to iCloud or restore from iCloud backup failed - Apple Support.
