Do you have Messages turned ON for iCloud? If YES then those messages are not backed up on iCloud however they can be retrieved (if they exist and you have not deleted them) just by logging your device to that iCloud account. If you do not have iCloud for Messages turned ON and you have a backup on iCloud (or a computer) then you can restore your iPhone from that backup file. Once you restore it then your Messages will be retrieved. Note that your iPhone will then be only as current as the day and time of that particular backup file.
