Disc Utility won't allow me to erase my hard drive

I'm trying to return my early 2014 MacBook air to factory settings for trade-in. When I try to erase my hard drive in the disc utility, it won't allow me to do so. Help!

Erasing hard drive MacBook 13" 10.6.8 I'm finally bringing my 2010 MacBook Pro to be recycled and am trying to wipe the hard drive. I've attempted to use the Disk Utility, but when I click the tab to "erase" I am unable to choose the hard drive. It is grayed out. I no longer have the installation disks. Can someone help me with another way to wipe my hard drive? Thanks in advance!

Read and follow the first set of instructions—those under How to erase your disk. Stop at Step 6.
