I bought an iPhone and got 1 year of Apple TV “free” why do I have to pay to watch anything?

The freebie is 'Apple TV+', which is a specific channel containing movies and TV shows created by and exclusive to Apple. It doesn't cover items from other sources such as iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime and so on.
