New Apple Watch won't accept my Apple ID and password. What is the solution?

My son just upgraded to the new Apple Watch and gave me his old one. He cleared it from his account. When I try to use my iPhone to set up the Watch and pair the two, the Watch ask for my User ID and Password (both of which are valid), my iPhone tells me I am using the incorrect Apple ID.
