Adding transitions to clips above main storyline.

How do I add a transition to a clip layered above the main storyline without affecting the clip below? For example, I have a station logo above the main storyline that I want to add a transition to so it animates in (like a push, blur, etc.) but when I apply the transition, it affects the main storyline layer. I'm coming from Adobe Premiere where this is easily done. I have experimented with several transitions and getting frustrated trying to get it to work. Surely there is a way.

That's it! I was selecting the clip and the transition together. When I selected the clip then the transition separately and made it a compound clip, it worked. I knew there had to be a way. Thanks a million!

It depends on what transition you are using and what you are transitioning from/to.

Some transitions affect the background.

To avoid that, enclose the clip and the transition in a compound clip.

Can you post a screenshot of that part of your timeline, before and after making the compound clip?

I tried it with the Push transition and it worked. Here is an example. I used the circle from the "Shapes" generator as my "logo", coming down from the top.

Before making a compound:

Then I pressed Option-G to make the logo and transition into a compound:

And here is the result:

Before compounding the clip, I needed to select the clip and the transition like this:

When I apply the slide transition instead, it works as expected without compounding the clip. Confusing.

Thanks. I tried that and it still affects the video on the storyline. I'm trying the "push" transition on a logo superimposed over the video in the storyline and the video pushes with it no matter what I do. I can't figure out how to quickly animate a logo in/out using transitions. Cross dissolve is the only transition that seems to work.

I really appreciate your help. That's how it should work. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I tried the same thing with shapes but still not working for me.

When I play the compound clip with the push transition the logo pushes in over black, then video comes back.

If you look carefully you will see that there is a small difference between my screenshots and yours: in the last screenshot my compound clip is still inside a storyline, but your isn’t. It seems that you selected the storyline and made the compound. Try NOT selecting the storyline, but select the clip and the transition - as seen im my first screenshot- and make the compound.

All the transitions are built differently. Some use system functions. Some are based on Motion. Most of the transitions can be modified in Motion.
