How do Apple verify customers sell their phone and are not stolen?

I bought a phone from the owner of a phone that still has an active Apple care + I am worried he may play a fast one on me and report it stolen so as to get a new one, how do Apple verify customers sell their phone and are not stolen, when they lay a claim that it was stolen?
