Yes now I realised you are on an older iOS you really do need to clean it.

I would make sure all your photos videos documents etc are imported to your computer or cloud drive then reset to factory. Start afresh.

If you backup and restore you might just reload the junk.

Could be just a whole wad of social networking history. If you want to keep that kind of history get a newer phone.

Try deleting unused apps and have taking lots of storage.

Maybe it's just time to get a device with more storage?

Basically you can't, it will still grow up back to 6-8GB quite fast.
