Lost iCloud photos

I have used Apple phones for approximately 8 years with the same Apple ID, in that time I have upgraded numerous times.

On checking my iCloud for photos from 6-8 years ago to print some out ... they do not show up on my iCloud. Only photos from 6 years to present day. What could have happened and is there any way of restoring them? Thank you.
