I have an iMac circa 2013. Want to add an external USB hub. Am I correct that I can use thunderbolt port to do this? If so - technical details as to cable and recommended USB hub please.

Rudegar is spot on. Just get a self-powered USB 3.0 hub and plug it into one of your 2013 iMac’s USB 3.0 ports.

AS Rudegar and den.thed have already recommended don't mess with an adaptor. It just adds complexity and expense to a simple solution. Just get a USB 3 self powered hub. I use this one and it works very well: BYEASY Aluminum USB 3.0 Hub 4 Ports
Most usb hubs connect to your USB ports, thunderbolt to usb converters add a much higher expense
