i am getting “The plug-in returned an error” message when trying to open word, xlsx, or especially pdf files. Sometimes I can get a file to open on the 2nd or 3rd try. My Mac mini System is super slow. I have a Mojave’s OS with 8GB of memory and 1 TB of storage. Any solutions that you know of?

So, you are saying revert to a back-up and then reinstall the most recent Mojave security updates in safe mode - correct? Asking because if I understood correctly that seems to me to be a more invasive (and risky) solution vs. deleting and reinstalling specific apps.
Oh, how about the 2020-005 Sec Upd?
That has messed up many people & the cure is to reinstall the OS in Safe Mode/
