airpods pro not connecting to macbook

I have tried all the troubleshooting tips but can not pair my airpods pro to my Macbook Air.

I have turned off bluetooth and turned it back on, I have made sure the airpods are in pairing mode. I have rest the airpods. I have made sure my phone's bluetooth is off. I even turned off my phone at one point. The macbook is able to detect the airpods but hitting connect does nothing. It spins for a few minutes then say not connected. A second attempt at hitting connect does nothing. Please help
