MacBook Airs made July 2011 or later, just need a command-R to reinstall, as long as the drive connected or internal is in good shape.

If the data is damaged, or in need of recovery, bring it to a recovery service first. Make sure your data is backed up before installing anything.

If you have no data of import on the machine and want to reinstall the original OS that came with the computer, you can command-option-shift-R boot your Mac, and use Disk Utility to wipe the machine and reinstall the original operating system that came with it. This needs internet access either by secure WiFi, or direct to ethernet on a high speed internet.

If Disk Utility of either command-R or command-option-shift-R can't see the drive you want to install on, you may have a damaged drive that needs replacing.

Macbook Airs older than July 1011 shipped with a USB thumb drive with the original operating system. This may be necessary if your Mac is that old, or if older than March 15, 2010, you can use the 10.6.3 retail DVD, and an external DVD burner.
