iMovie supports .mov files, so in most cases you shouldn't have to do anything to them. However, .mov files can differ since they are a bucket that can contain different codecs. If the .mov file isn't working in iMovie, you can try opening and saving it with QuickTimePlayer to get a .mov file that will work with iMovie.
Another way would be to use the free download, Handbrake, to convert the file to Mp4/AAC. You can get Handbrake here:
A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. The converted clips will work in iMovie.
