My brand new MacBook Air comes with a cord but no charger. Do I need to purchase a separate charger to plug in?

Do I need to purchase a charger for my 2020 MacBook Air? It came with only a cord.

Where did you buy it?

It should have come with a charger. If it didn't, take it back.
