Family plan for iCloud
I am curious about getting iCloud for the whole family. Specifically I am curious about the photo backup.. Do the photos get mixed from each individual on the plan or are they kept separate?

All storage is separate. You can opt to share photos the same as you can even if you aren't sharing a storage plan. See information in Share an iCloud storage plan with your family - Apple Support including the following:
When you share a storage plan, your photos and documents stay private and everyone keeps using their own accounts with iCloud—just like when you have your own storage plan. You simply share the space available in the iCloud storage plan with your family members, so you only have one plan to manage.
