Correct, as stated above, that model can not be upgraded further.
If your device is running iOS 12.4.8, you have an iPhone 6, not a 6S. Otherwise, post back with details.
Software update is a button you click under Settings.
Do that over Wi-Fi.

You state you have an iPhone 6, then you say it is a 6S, so you will need to provide accurate information.
