Storage on my iPhone

I need to know if I backed up my phone last night do I need to delete the photos off my phone in order to free up space

If you delete the photos off your device, they will be deleted from iCloud and all of your devices you're logged into. To free up space in your iCloud -- Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support.
