How do I format a new hard drive to backup my MacBook Pro? What format should I use?

I realise this question may be old. I'm hoping Apple has upgraded this system to do this automatically so I can use Timed Backup. Last time I bought an external hard drive I had to choose which format I wanted for my external hard drive.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15
