Macbook Pro Software update 2010

I currently have a 2010 MacBook Pro that I was gifted. im trying to update the software to at least Catalina but every time I try it says I can't update to the certain version. please help.

Catalina can only be installed on Macs from 2012 and later. The last version of macOS compatible with your model is High Sierra. Please see How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra.
