I cannot pair my new series 5 Apple Watch to my iPhone 6 Plus

I cannot pair my new series 5 Apple Watch to my iPhone 6 Plus! It does not make sense to purchase newer phone. Is there a work around to get the 6 plus paired? If not, can I still use the watch without pairing?

No. Apple Watch Series 5 requires an iPhone 6s with iOS 13 or later.
