Why iTunes asks to setup my iPad as new or restore when I only want to do a back up?

Why iTunes asks to setup my iPad as new or restore when I only want to do a back up? I have a new computer, could that be the reason? How can I do the back up? I am trying to do it via USB with iTunes.
