Mid 2010 MacBook Pro hangs up during boot

Hi All,

When I try to start up my aging MacBook Pro, the apple logo appears, the line fills across below it, but once it is completely filled in, the machine hangs and won't go any farther. I think there are some keyboard commands to get around this, but I can't remember or find them. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The startup key combo most useful in this situation is Safe Mode—hold SHIFT at startup and continue holding until you get a message that Safe Mode has been achieved, or you have a workable desktop. Holding SHIFT for several minutes is normal.

NOTE: Safe Mode disables many needed extensions so don't expect the computer to work normally. If you get stability with the SAFE mode boot, then do a normal boot and see if function has returned. Safe Mode boot does some file cleanup. If this does not work, the odds that you are facing a hardware issues just went up.

A 2010 model would have shipped with optical disks for reinstalling the OS and doing maintenance. Do you still have those?
