Transfer of Data

How do I transfer all data from my Macbook Air to my new Macbook Pro? Migration Assistant isn't working.

The two laptops just keep showing a circle. The new macbook pro says look for other sources. I can't remember what the air says. Do I have to back up the macbook air onto an external drive first?
