I have tried for months to sign in to both iMessage and Facetime on Catalaina (and the previous OS) without success. I have signed in and out of iCloud, tested passwords but all to no avail. I just get "an error occurred during authentication".

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Ah yes, Avast is no help at removing itself...
Uninstall Avast per their directions then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left.

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
Thanks. I created a new account with admin rights. Logged in with my (same) Apple ID account - new account was set up successfully. Opened iMessage - same login credentials. Failed with same error message.
No to the OS. I've only recently upped to catalina and the issue predated it. I use a VPN but not all the time and have tried with it on and off.
I have Avast anti virus. But getting rid of it is not so easy as I tried without success recently. So I think this will be my next step - revisiting deleting Avast.
We need to Uninstall MacKeeper for sure & these files & restart...

Yes still no luck. No change. New account gave the same error. Existing account gives the same error.
I think a reinstall of the OS is called for then.
Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?
Ive got rid of Avast. Still cannot sign in to iMessage

Hi, Thanks. I deleted some of those but others are parts of apps I use. Deleted any mackeeper files I found (didnt even know I had it) but the login issue remains :(
