Transfer data from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

What is the best way to transfer a backup from my external hard drive (USB) to my new MacBook Air (thunderbolt only)?

Migration assistant seems to confuse me.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Migration Assistant instructions are here: How to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

You can attempt simply restoring that entire Time Machine backup to the new MacBook Air, but without knowing the age of your MBP or the macOS version it uses it's anyone's guess if that will work.

Connecting the two will require a USB to USB-C a/k/a "Thunderbolt 3" adapter like this one: Apple USB-C to USB Adapter
